What to Tell Your Barber to Get the Cut You Want

Tell your barber five things: the length you want on top, how short the sides and back should go (skin or a guard number), where the fade or taper should start, how you want the line up and neckline finished, and how often you'll come back. Bring a photo. It removes the guesswork.

1. The top

How much length to keep, in inches or by pinching it. Say whether you push it back, part it, or wear it textured.

2. The sides and back

Skin, or a guard number. If you don't know numbers, say "short but not skin" and your barber will show you.

3. Where the blend starts

Low, mid or high. See our guide to the types of fades.

4. The finish

Sharp line up or natural hairline? Squared, rounded or tapered neckline?

5. Your schedule

If you can only come every five weeks, your barber will cut for that instead of for the first week.

Quick questions

What if I don't like it?

Say so while you're still in the chair. Good barbers would rather adjust than have you leave unhappy.
