Hot Towel Straight Razor Shave: What to Expect

A hot towel straight razor shave takes about 45 minutes. Your barber softens the beard with hot towels, applies pre-shave oil and hot lather, shaves with a straight razor, often in two passes, then finishes with conditioning creams. It's closer and gentler than a home razor when done right.

Step by step

Hot towels first, to open the pores and soften the hair. Then pre-shave oil and hot lather. Your barber shaves with the grain, relathers, and may do a second pass for a closer finish. Conditioning creams calm the skin at the end.

Before you come in

Give it a few days of growth: about two to three days gives the razor something to work with. Skip harsh scrubs the day before.

Aftercare

Keep your hands off your face for the rest of the day, skip alcohol-heavy aftershaves, and moisturize. If you're prone to bumps, tell your barber before the shave.

Face or head

Original Walker's does both: a hot towel face shave and a hot towel head shave, $55 each. Want everything at once? Ask about El Presidente.

Quick questions

Does a straight razor shave hurt?

It shouldn't. Hot towels and lather soften the hair, and a skilled barber keeps the blade at a shallow angle.

How long does a straight razor shave last?

Most people stay smooth for a day or two longer than with a cartridge razor.
